Ph.D.degree in materials science, 1984 from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (CVUT), Prague.
Originally working as a scientific researcher with the (former) National Research Institute for Materials (SVUM) in Prague, he spent over 26 years in the labs of the Department of Engineering Plastics and Composites, dealing with problems of strength, fracture, creep and fatigue of nonmetallic engineering materials under contracts from aircraft, automotive, and other branches of the Czech and foreign industry.
He is author and co-author of more than 200 original scientific papers, conference papers, research & technical reports (see also the selected own publications), long term member of the Czech Society of Mechanics; he was also committee member and committee chairman of the group Mechanics of Composite Materials and Systems).
